The gilded Kammavaca leaves usually date from the 20th century with the lacquer layers being built up over a fabric ground by successive layers of laquer. When the individual leaves / pages are bound together, they would have constituted a book. Earlier examples tend to have fewer lines of text and may be on a wide variety of substrates - palm leaf, ivory and metal.
